Last night I joined my mom and her friends at the Black Diamond Christmas concert. It was brilliant. The feeling in the Oilsands High School Gym was warm and cozy and the singing was great. They had these wonderful paper old-school christmas lights that were each probably a couple feet strung by ribbon dangling across the stage and huge hand painted paper ornaments fastened to the curtain. There was saxophone, drums, violin, slide guitar, base and acoustic guitar, key-board and all the singers rotated as back-up for the others. It has been a long time since I have been to a concert in a school gym. I liked it. I liked that the MC said "as smooth as vaseline on a babies bum". I liked that the musicians were all local and seemed proud of being from small towns. I liked that the kids in front of us were sprawled out asleep on the folding chairs by the end of the concert. I loved that half of the population taking in the Christmas love were cowboys : )
I clapped and sang, bobbed and swayed, smiled and laughed. Just as my mom did beside me. Quite a still audience in such a packed gym though. Country folk? Alberta Folk? Canadian Folk? I dunno but I wonder how on earth they keep their feet from taping when mine are dancing the jig.
