We can still believe, but by acknowledging that, we must acknowledge there's a story to life - and all stories end. In the arc of our lives now, the story of life, bad things are beginning to happen as frequently as good - aging, illness, death - and we're instinctively afraid that if we open ourselves up fully, we'll let in not just joy, but sorrow.
